They are a mutual organisation, and use the money deposited by their savers to grant mortgages on properties and projects that help the environment. They have grown steadily since their formation, as more and more people decide to put their savings to positive use. Based in Yorkshire, their savings and mortgages are available across the U.K. Their AGM is held in a different part of the country each year, at a venue of environmental interest. This enables members living around the country to attend. The Ecology Building Society is a unique lending institution established to provide mortgages for properties which give an ecological payback. They lend nationally, covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - all from their office in Yorkshire. You do not have to be 'green' to get an Ecology mortgage. Many of their borrowers have environmental concerns, others simply want to rescue a derelict property to make into their home.
