Norwich and Peterborough Building Society

The former Norwich Building Society was founded on 6th April 1852 under the imposing title of 'Norwich and District Provident Permanent Benefit Building and Freehold Land Society'.

The name accurately described the area in which the Society operated and reflected the fact that it had been established for the mutual benefits of its members.

After the Second World War, the Society eventually became an incorporated, legal entity and ceased to act in the name of its trustees and to mark this the name was changed to Norwich Building Society.

Peterborough Provincial Benefit Building Society was formed in the winter of 1860 by a group of railwaymen. The railway boom and increasing population in the area was making housing scarce.

The Peterborough Building Society incorporated the King's Lynn Building Society in 1967, the Stamford Building Society in 1980 and the Argyle Building Society in 1985.

Norwich and Peterborough Building Society was formed on 31st October 1986 when the Peterborough and the Norwich Building Societies merged. At that time the Peterborough's assets were £280 million and the Norwich's were £176 million.

The Society now has 59 branches. Whilst these are mainly located in East Anglia and Lincolnshire, it also has a branch in Gibraltar (opened in 1990) and an agency in York.

The principal office, on a "green field" business park, just outside Peterborough was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1988.
